The latest sustainable packaging news and trends from around the world

Some of the world’s biggest brands are stepping up their game when it comes to sustainability, with plans to switch to biodegradable and compostable packaging.

Mars Wrigley recently announced it was partnering with Danimer Scientific to develop compostable packaging for Skittles in the US. The polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) wrapper will look and feel the same as plastic but can be added to compost where it will break down (unlike regular plastic that can take up to 450 years to fully decompose). This new packaging is scheduled to hit shelves on 2022.

Ritter, the German chocolate brand, recently switched the packaging for their “Mini Mix” selection packs from trays wrapped in plastic film to pouches made of paper. Diageo, manufacturer of some of the world’s finest spirits and beers, described plans for the packaging of Johnnie Walker Scotch as their “biggest-ever sustainability push.”

By 2030, all Johnnie Walker packaging (including secondary packaging such as gift boxes) will be recyclable, reusable or compostable. They also plan to use a minimum of 60% recycled glass in their core range bottles by 2025, which is estimated to use 13,000 fewer tonnes of carbon every year.

What does this mean for your business?

With some of the world’s biggest companies putting long-term plans in place for adopting more sustainable practices, many smaller business owners are also considering how they can improve. Being environmentally conscious doesn’t just have a positive impact on the planet, it also makes good business sense.

As consumers seek to shop more ethically, a recent survey showed that 62% of people are more likely to buy from brands that use sustainable packaging. Making positive changes could help to set you apart from the competition and encourage trust in your brand.
